Developer Anfibia Software came up with the Deskman security tool for advanced and power users who want to secure their desktop by setting up restrictions to keep things just the way they want. The application can prevent Start Menu modifications, disable the context menu, disable the display properties, allow only freezed applications, prevent changes to desktop icons, and more.

2.5MB is the size of the Deskman installation file; at such a small size, it will take but a moment to download it. The desktop security tool can be installed on top of 32 and 64-bit editions of Windows 7, Vista, or XP. Run the aforementioned 2.5MB installation file and a setup wizard will take you through the installation process.

There’s a very large amount of text on Deskman’s interface and that’s because the application lets you disable or remove tons of functions. The interface isn’t hard to figure out. The top position is taken up by the traditional File Menu. Underneath it there are some large buttons for accessing Deskman’s main functions (Secure, Settings, Freeze, Lock, etc). The main window is organized into tabs; each tab presents options so you can customize your Deskman experience (check /uncheck various functions you want to disable/remove).

By default the No Restrictions profile is enabled when you first launch Deskman. As the name so adequately points out, this profile applies no restrictions to the desktop and system. There are several other predefined security profiles you can activate – you can find them in the File Menu -> Load Security Profile.

Or you could go through the tabs and customize your Deskman experience. You can pick and choose the features and functions you want to hide, disable or remove. The nice thing about Deskman is that it gives you easy access to a myriad of functions you could disable/hide/remove. To name but a few, you can disable the right click context menu, remove the Computer (or My computer) icon, disable the address bar in Internet Explorer, disable cut/copy/paste, disable pinned icons from the Start menu, block access to the Control Panel, hide the traybar clock, disable Win keys, disable right click mouse button, block changes to desktop icons, and more. And to make sure no one circumvents the restrictions you put in place, you can password protect the Deskman application.

You can assess the functionality Deskman has to offer for free for a trial period of 30 days. You will have to purchase a license to keep using the application.

Disable or block access to a long list of functions with the Deskman desktop security tool.

Pros

Works with 32 and 64-bit editions of Windows; takes little time to install the application. Hide the application to the system tray, bring out with a handy hotkey. You can block or disable a long, long list of functions. There are predefined security profiles you can load. The interface is easy to use.

Cons

Free to use for a 30-day trial.
